Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation on Friday began using three drones to spray Larviside to fight mosquito threats.
The corporation wants to end mosquito threats in the city as part of Singara Chennai 2.0.
The Civic body has taken three drones.
Each will be used in five main channels and 31 small city channels.
Drones weigh 45 kg and have two tanks.
One is loaded with three liters of gasoline and the other with 10 kg of larvisides.
Drones were operated by trained pilots sent by Anna University, and they flew them for four hours every day.
“The idea is to use one drone per region and covers three zones every day.
In this way, in 15 days, we will cover all channels.
This project starts on July 1 and will continue up to 15 months,” said Selvakumar, Chief Vector Control Officer Of GCC.
He added that the civil body had collected water samples from these channels to study the density of larvae before spraying drugs.
“Based on that, we have decided on the number of larvisides that need to be sprayed in this area.
Also, after 15 days, we will collect water samples to check the density of larvae to understand whether the work of spraying helps control the spread of larvae,” he said.
The five main rivers and canals are Cooum, Adyar, B Can, OTTI Nallah and Virugambakkkam and Arumbakkam channels.
Apart from this, the Civic’s body has begun sending domestic breeding examiners and sanitation workers to households to check and curb mosquito breeding spots.
