Child marriage spike during a pandemic in Krishnagiri Dist

Krishnagiri: The Childline has seen an 82% surge in a call to report children’s marriage in the district during April 2020 March 2021, compared to the same period in 2019-2020, showing an increase in the incidence of small girls to get married when the school was closed because of a pandemic.
In accordance with the data available with Childline, Helpline has received 327 calls that reported child marriages from April 2020 to 2021, compared with 179 calls in 2019-2020.
It has stopped 279 marriages during March 2020 2021 and 117 in 2019-2020.cn Prasnana Kumari, the son coordinator, Krishnagiri Regency, said the lack of fear of the punishment among parents was the main reason for the marriage of a child.
According to social welfare officials in the Collectorate District, a team of officials will visit the children’s house and stop marriage after receiving information about the upcoming Minor marriage.
As long as the child’s parents will be made to sign a statement that they will not marry their daughter.
Until he reached the age of the law for marriage.
Police complaints will only be asked when parents try to marry their daughter before he reaches legal age, the officer said.
However, officers Kumari, said according to the ban on the child’s marriage law, it was obliged to apply for police complaints as when the child’s marriage was stopped.
Chairman of the Welfare Welfare Committee of the Committee (CWC) and the District Children’s Protection Unit (DCPU) must be given more power about child marriage, because they only deal with child problems.
At present, it is not mandatory to involve CWC and DCPU in all cases of child marriage.
Kalaivani, Chairperson, CWC, said, “When CWC members or DCPU staff are involved in stopping child marriages, they see whether children need care and protection.
If he needs, they send him to the reception house, otherwise he will live with his family and members of the CWC will check it regularly until the girl becomes a major.
In a case where CWC is not involved, officials send children to the committee only when children need care and protection.
“Prasanna Kumari said it made it mandatory to involve CWC or DCPU in every child marriage case, making Their Nodal Authority to submit a police complaint and made him obliged to send children to the home reception for the buffer period would help reduce child marriage.
Pati to get comments from the district’s social welfare officer failed to produce any results.
