CHENNAI: City business colleges have filed a steep increase in enrolment because the pandemic set-in along with the amount of students changing to civic body-run colleges in government-aided and private colleges has doubled in comparison to pre-Covid decades, official data shows.
Greater Chennai Corporation conducts 281 colleges — 119 main, 92 centre, 38 older and 32 bigger secondary colleges.
From the academic year 2019-20, 18,605 pupils in Courses IXI registered in GCC colleges.
Of these, 6,533 were out of government-aided and private colleges.
In 2020-21, following the outbreak put in, the enrolment in company schools climbed to 27,843 — a 33 percent jump in the prior calendar year.
The year also saw a enormous gain in the amount of pupils departing government-aided and private colleges to its GCC-run schools using 14,763 of these pupils registering.
This was double the amount of pupils made the change the prior calendar year.
Civic officials anticipate high enrolment figures at the present academic year (2021-22) too.
While admissions started on June 14, approximately 7,000 students have enrolled in company schools.
“Admissions into the colleges will be available till December because of the outbreak, we anticipate enrolment to exceed previous season’s figures,” explained R Bharatidasan, instructional officer of GCC.
Corporation officials find excellent infrastructure and conveniences as among the two important reasons for the greater enrolment.
“The enhanced facilities at the universities have captured the eye of individuals.
Our infrastructure fits of private schools.
Good drinking water, grounds and excellent bathrooms are accessible.
The standard of English medium instruction is too large,” a civic officer stated.

The pandemic has pushed many households into poverty because of job losses and insolvency because of mounting medical bills.
“Because of this, many households cannot afford private schooling and enrol their children in business colleges,” the official said, including GCC will still continue to climb upward facilities in its colleges farther.
The body has pioneered transformation of 70 schools using modern teaching equipment and even improved sports facilities.
