Riyadh: Two injured children and 14 houses were damaged when Saudi troops intercept ballistic missiles who shot across the border by Yemen’s rebels, spreading debris above the eastern city of Dammam, said officials said.
The attack, which took place on Saturday, was the latest in the series by Huthi rebels supported by Iran who controlled almost all Yemen’s North.
Saudi Arabia intervened in the Yemeni war on behalf of internationally recognized government in 2015, shortly after Huthis won the capital Sanaa.
“Saudi Air Defense has been intercepted and destroyed (3) ballistic missiles and (3) bomb-loaded drones launched by the Iranian-supported Houthi militia,” said Spokesman General Brigadier Turkey Al-Maliki in a statement, called it “no brutal behavior responsible.
“by Yemen’s rebels.
A spokesman at the Ministry of Defense on Sunday said that two children were injured and 14 houses were damaged after the debris from the interception spread in Dammam.
It is not clear how seriously the injury was reported.
Saudi authorities said ballistic missiles were targeting civilians in the East Province – where Dammam was – and the southern cities of Najran and Jazan.
Huthi spokesman Yahya Saree said in a video statement that rebels launched a series of missile attacks and drones on “vital installations”, including military bases and Saudi Aramco oil giant facilities.
A Saudi official told AFP that rebel claims “unfounded”.
There are no direct comments available from Aramco.
East Saudi Arabia is home to the main oil infrastructure.
Previous attacks in September 2019 temporarily stopped half of the production of kingdom oil.
The Saudi LED coalition that fought rebels in Yemen said to the television managed by the government, it would take “strict steps” to protect civilians.
In August, the rebels increased cross-border operations using unmanned air vehicles and missiles.
Interception Saturday came four days after the drone crashed into Abha International Airport in the south, injuring eight people and damaged the civilian plane.
It also came just hours before Hans Grundberg, the new UN envoy for Yemen, assumed his duties on Sunday.
Yemen’s grinding conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and replacing millions of people, resulting in what is called the United Nations for the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.
While the United Nations encouraged to end the war, Huthis had demanded the reopening of Sanaa airport, closed under the Saudi blockade since 2016, before constipation or negotiations.
