The number of children’s rape victims in Tamil Nadu rose 28.8% to 2,227 in 2020 compared to 1,729 in 2019, the highest among major countries and far above the national average of 7%.
According to NCRB, TN recorded an increase in cases under Pocso (protection of children from sexual violations) acting in 2020 with 3,057 cases involving 3,103 victims.
In 2019, there were 2358 cases involving 2,389 victims.
Of the 3,057 cases in 2020, 2,205 is a child rape case.
Data on children rape does not include male victims.
The incident of rape of adult women in Tamil Nadu rose 7.7% by 2020, although the national average fell 12.7% in the midst of national locking which limited movement for a significant period.
Tamil Nadu (390 women raped in 2020 against 362 in 2019) was one of the six countries that saw a higher rape incident, registering the third largest rate after Chhattisgarh and Bihar.
