LONDON: China and India need to explain to developing countries why they encourage language with efforts to remove coal at the COP26 conference, President Alok Sharma said on Sunday.
The UN climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland, ended on Saturday with an agreement targeting fossil fuels for the first time.
But India, which is supported by China and developing countries that depend on other coal, reject clauses calling for “phase out” coal power, and the text is converted to “phase down”.
“In terms of China and India, they will with this particular problem have to explain themselves,” Sharma said at a press conference at Downing Street in London.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “Is the language ‘phase down’ or ‘phase’ seems not for me as a English speaker to make a big difference.” The direction of the trip is almost the same.
“Johnson said COP26 has sent a mandate to cut the use of coal power plants supported by the concrete actions of each district.” When you add all of it together, it has no questions that Glasgow has ringed the death bells for coal power, ” He told a press conference.
But he said his pleasure on the progress achieved was colored by a disappointment that the agreement did not go further.
” Unfortunately, that’s the nature of diplomacy, “he said.” We can persuade, we can copy, we can push, but we cannot force the sovereign countries to do what they do not want to do.
