Beijing: China detected 37 new Covid-19 cases among the people connected with the Olympics on Sunday, up from 34 days earlier, said Beijing Organizing Committee 2022 Winter Games.
Twenty-eight from new cases were positively tested after arriving at the airport, including eight athletes or team officials because they participated in February 4-21, organizers said on Monday in a notification on the website.
Authorities impose strict health steps for games with participants, staff and media operating in bubbles “closed loops” that separate them from the public.
Loop allows participants to move freely between accommodation and their Olympics on official transportation but they are not permitted to move freely in public.
In contrast to many countries who want to live with Covid-19, China has isolated themselves with zero tolerance policies, canceling almost all international flights.
Olympic athletes and others have to fly directly to the city with charter flights.
Everyone involved in the game, including the media and staff, are also being tested every day.
The world’s leading ski jumper, Marita Kramer from Austria, was tested positive ahead of her flight to Beijing and will now delay his departure when he tried to fit the competition.
Kramer, who leads the overall World Cup standings women in front of Germany Katharina Althaus and topped the podium in eight of the last 11 competitions, tested positive in Willingen, Germany, the last competition in front of the match.
“Officials currently work on time plans to enable World Cup leaders to take part in the Olympics in Beijing,” said the Austrian Ski Federation.
Kramer has no symptoms and no other team members are tested positively.
There was also good news for the Australian Curling team after one of the athletes returned two negative tests after the initial positive in the Chinese capital on Sunday.
Tahli Gill’s clamp and teammate Dean Hewitt had been isolated for two days after Tahli was tested positive at the Beijing airport.
“We are very relieved as a team, which does not need to be said.
But what is important for us is good as a team, this experience will not define our Olympic campaign.
We have treats this time as a day of rest and time to truly focus on our Olympic destination , “The Second said in a statement.
