Glasgow: China’s top climate negotiator on Wednesday said Beijing has agreed with the United States to improve cooperation in climate action, including with methane emissions.
Speaking through translators, Xie Zhenhua told reporters at the UN Climate Conference at Glasgow that China would strengthen its emission cut target, and was intended to develop a national plan in methane.
He also said the two countries wanted to do more to stop deforestation.
Xie said the United States and China, two largest greenhouse gas emites in the world, have also reached an agreement on Wednesday on a shared declaration, which will be released.
The United Kingdom has organized a COP26 meeting at Glasgow, Scotland, which aims to secure the number of nolon zero carbon emissions and maintain the target of the Paris Agreement from a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius within reach to curb the impact of global warming.
Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend the UN meeting directly.
Instead, last week he delivered a written statement to the opening section of the Summit when leaders usually addressed.
In it, he does not offer additional promises, while urging the state to keep their promises and “strengthen mutual trust and cooperation”.
XI promised the UN General Assembly in September that China would reach carbon neutrality before 2060.
