Mumbai: Shower Culture in Ratnagiri District Hilly Area, Illegal Construction near Vashisthi River Bed and Water Debit from Kolkewadi Dam all combined to cause chaos in Chiplun Beach City, officials said on Thursday because the administration was seeking help from several agents In rescue efforts.
More than 50 percent of the Chiplun area, located about 250 km from Mumbai and has a population of more than 70,000, has sunk in the flood waters.
B N Patil, Ratnagiri District collector who considers the charges of his office just two weeks back, now has called several NDRF teams, Coast Guard, Navy and Army to carry out rescue operations.
“I have asked six additional NDRF teams apart from the previous two.
The coast guard has helped here, while the Indian Navy sent his team here tomorrow morning.
I also asked the Indian army to use his column to carry out rescue operations,” he told PTI.
“There are some illegal construction near the River Bed, which has added to our misery.
Water Dam (from Kolongwadi), very heavy rainfall and illegal construction on the river bed – all have contributed to the current situation.
That is partly man-made disaster,” he said.
“As soon as the flood water recedes, I will see illegal construction problems near the River Bed,” Patil said.
He said more than 200 people had been saved from the flood-hit area.
“At the end of the night, the NDRF team began rescue operations and more than 200 people were saved by them.
We also began distributing food packages to people who had moved to the second floor or three multi-floor buildings,” Patil said.
Mumbai-based Western Naval Command confirmed received requests from the Maharashtra government to send rescue teams.
“Five teams will reach Chiplun on Friday morning.
Every team will have around five people and one boat, which will be able to save 5-7 adults at a time.
If needed, we will send more teams,” said a spokesman Indian Navy.
K s Hosalali, Senior Scientist at IMD, Pune, said, “The latest radar image shows a very intense cloud in parts of the Raigad-Roha area, Satara-Mahabaleshwar and the parts of Ratnagiri and Dapoli.”
