Nagpur: Former students from the Fine Arts Department at Nagpur University, now are energetic professional artists, busy creating interesting metal murals to decorate the Pillar Metro Nagpur.
After the unity theme and progress in Chhattrapati Chowk, the second murals of the Nagpur’s unique tradition of ‘patterns’ have been completed at the Cotton Market Square recently.
The third job will illustrate the beauty of the procession of ‘Marbat’ and will decorate the pillar at Chitar Oli Square.
The artists worked under the guidance of Dr.
Vinod Indurkar, a former head of the Nagpur University Fine Arts Department, who recently took over the chairman of the art education in India in Ncert.
Dr.
Indurkar said they had a vision, and took great efforts to beautify the streets of Nagpur.
“Pillar painting is a pretty popular idea and we have some paintings in Nagpur.
Make metal murals is something new, and also last longer,” said Dr.
Indurkar.
Artists use sheet metal, iron rods, screws, nut bolts and other metal materials to make this craft.
After cutting, embossing, welding, and coloring, artwork is repaired on metal frames around the pillar.
“This process is boring compared to painting.
It takes two-three months to make a work of art.
But this artwork is based on themes and they are here to stay,” said Dr.
Indurkar.
Artwork painted with a special layer of polyurethane (PU) that offers many advantages for metal substrate applications.
PU coating provides a very good look, and UV and resistant chemicals.
A similar artwork was previously made in the Kavikulguru Kidas Sanskrit University (KKSU) place in Ramtek, which has completely changed its appearance.
Agra’s development authority has also invited this team to decorate traffic booths and boxes in historic cities.
“This is a matter of pride for all of us that artists who learn art in Nagpur work professionally at the national level now,” said Dr.
Indurkar.
