Nagpur: Daily garbage produced in the city as long as it is available for almost 200 million.
A senior official from the Solid Waste Management Department confirmed that city daily garbage collection on November 5 passed 1.350MT, from 1,150MT on the day before Diwali, almost 200MT more than usual per day.
On Friday afternoon, when the truck has lowered the waste collected from various parts of the city in Bothandewadi, the reading on the weighbridge is 1,350mt.
Nevertheless, around 30% of waste removed from the streets in 10 zones.
The source engaged in managing city sanitation works for Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) said the city produced around 1,150 mt of garbage per day.
Last year, because of the restrictions on Covid-19, many residents held back so they would not break.
This year is exactly the opposite.
The use of firecrackers is increasing this year and even the number of cracker stores has gone up.
Against 582 stores arranged across the city in 2020, this year the NMC firefighting department issued as many as 665 no certificate of objections for firecrackers in the city.
Activists and Founders of the Green Vigil Foundation Kaustav Chatterjee said, “We always talk about air pollution and noise because it explodes from crackers but the generation of solid waste due to exploding crackers also has significant side effects on the environment.” “A large number of solid waste produced adds to the additional burden on street cleaners.
Residents prefer to break crackers on the streets, not in their own place to avoid cleaning activities needed after that,” he said.
The solid waste produced was collected by city waste collectors and dumped in Banhandewi along with routine city waste.
The solid waste produced contains many burning crackers, which might burn in Blandewadi causing a fire, because a large number of dry solid waste already exists in Blandewadi, and bio-compost leads to the formation of methane gas, he shows.
According to the officials of the Solid Waste Management Department, the Sanitation Department ensured that pickup trucks made more trips from normally to transport waste from the whole city.
The source shows all the waste produced on Diwali days cannot be removed due to lack of sanitation workers.
In many places, especially in Gandhibagh, Itwari, Lalgatj, Jaripatka etc.
Women workers work extra time to clear the streets because of waste produced by firecrackers burst.
