Coimbatore: These three school students in the city have won six medals, including two gold, in the 14th GFI National Grappling Championship held in Shirdi in Maharashtra, recently.
Whether SP Praghalya was 13 years old, a VII student of a private school at Trichy Road, who pocketed two gold medals in the ‘GI’ and ‘NO-GI’ event in the category of heavy 30kg.
His 16-year-old sister Sp Naghalya, a class XI student from the same school, secured two bronze medals in the 42kg category.
The third winner was V Dinesh Kumar, a class VII student at the City Hall, which bagged two bronze medals on the GI and No-GI program in the 30kg category.
The National Grappling Championship, which concluded on December 26, 2021, has recorded more than 1,500 athletes from all over the country.
Praghalya, who holds two state-level gold medals, said the stage was dominated by participants from Maharashtra.
“I have the opportunity to watch a few early matches and understand their strategies.
Even though it is a self-defense sport, I am more profitable my technique rather than the physical strength to defeat the opponent.
Defense is my strong area and I managed to break their keys and chocking them.
“Naghalya said he was inspired by his younger sister to take sports.
“I’m doing yoga for flexibility and can take the game in a short time.
But winning a national medal is indeed beans that are difficult to crack.” He said he wanted to be an Air Force pilot.
Parimala’s siblings mother Sivakumar is a treasurer with coimbatore grappling association.
He said more students took sports after the center enrolled in 2019.
