City to use city waste to produce electricity

Times News Network Varanasi: The holy city of Varanasi is ready to be used for green energy with NTPC support by installing a ‘Waste’ (WTE) factory to produce electrical waste using city waste.
Nagar Nagam Varanasi has allocated around 20 hectares of land in Ramana for establishing a WTE factory.
In an effort towards sustainable development, NTPC Vyapar Nigam Vyapar (NVVN) Limited, a subsidiary of NTPC Ltd., has signed an agreement with Varanasi Nagar Nagar to prepare the WTE factory worth RS 180 Crore.
The agreement was signed between the authority of NVVN and Commissioner of the City of Varanasi Dushyant Kumar Maurya on Friday.
NTPC spokesman said that NVVN had been conducting an order for engineering construction contract work (EPC) from the factory for rapid project implementation.
The factory will help reduce environmental hazards caused by solid waste and bring a clean environment to contribute to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi about Swachh Bharat.
The factory will be a milestone for Varanasi against Atmanirbhar Bharat using the latest Indigenous Make in Indian technology for solid waste management in this country.
Plants with 600-800 tons of waste separation capacity per day will be installed under the project.
Furthermore, this waste will be processed and put into the reactor to produce torrefied charcoal.
Torrefied charcoal similar to natural coal can be successfully mixed with fuel in a thermal power plant to produce electricity.
The process is environmentally friendly because the temperature is lower than other technologies, because there are no toxic emissions.
Recently, NVVN signed a similar agreement with Bhopal Municipal Corporation.
