Since the outbreak Covid in March 2020, rental accommodation around educational institutions have fewer takers for schools and colleges were closed.
Now, with classes continuing oncampus, rentals in Mysore have skyrocketed.
Fearing they would be infected wards if they send children on a school bus or auto-rickshaw, parents prefer home school.
In areas near major educational institutions, ‘to let’ boards have disappeared and the demand for housing increases as the family returned from their hometowns to ensure their children attend regular classes.
For example, in bogadi, RR Nagar, Dattagalli and Vijayanagar Mysore City area, rent a two-bedroom house, which is between Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000, has now risen to anywhere between Rs 11,000 and Rs 12,000.
Even in areas Roopanagar, rents to independent house now above Rs 10,000.
It was less than Rs 8,000 to a few months ago.
Siddarthanagar in upscale area, rents have increased from Rs 18,000-Rs 19,000 to Rs 20,000 and Rs 22,000.
However, demand for the advanced amount has come down drastically with homeowners more specific about the monthly rent.
The real estate agent said the rent for the house next door to the generally high educational institutes.
“It has gone down last year after the institution was closed, but now the demand has increased,” said Mruthyunjayappa, a real estate consultant in bogadi.
Paying guest accommodation which is closed during the last 18 months, was also revived.
The monthly fee ranging from Rs 4,500 on average in PGS around the University of Mysore (UOM) and Maharani College, among others.
Santosh Kumar, Mysore representative of Related Management Primary and Secondary Schools (KAMS), said generally higher rents in an area with many educational institutions.
“Last year it was less.
Now, with the academic activities back on track, rates have increased,” he said.
