New Delhi: The ambitious climate action in developing countries depends on the support of developed countries under the Paris agreement, India reiterated on Monday during the UN-held meeting.
Attending an almost closed meeting with the United Nations (PBB) Secretary General António Guterres and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the Minister of Environment Union Bhupender Yadav, representing India, asking developed countries to meet the objectives of USD 100 billion per year.
Made in 2009.
“COP26 must focus on climate finance in the scope, scale and speed and transfer of green technology at a low cost,” he said.
Yadav underlined the need to uphold the principles of the UNFCCC process (UN framework convention on climate change) for successful results in any climate change negotiations, including future COP26.
At the meeting, crucial climate action on finance, mitigation and adaptation needed to deal with the climate crisis was discussed, said the Ministry of Environment.
The meeting was held by the UN Secretary General with the selected leaders ahead of the 26th Conference of the Party (COP26) scheduled to be held at Glasgow in November.
Yadav talked about the concrete climate that India had taken, including 450 gw renewable energy in 2030, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He also mentions that considering the findings of the latest IPCC reports, the latest UNFCCC synthesis reports, and the fact that collectively developed countries have emitted more than the estimated emissions benefits in the period 2008-2020, they must take greater action on mitigation and provide financial support for developing countries.
The Minister of Environment emphasizes that even at the UNFCCC, there is a very urgent need to provide interests for adaptation and discuss whether the scale of resources is commensurate with the scale of the needs of developing countries, the ministry said.
