Sunita Narain is the Director General of the Center for Science and Environment (CSE).
Speaking to Srijana Mitra Das sometimes arouse, he discusses internally displaced people driven by climate change in India – and mitigation that can change this situation around:
How do you describe climate migration in India at this time?
At present, we have no many statistical data about climate migration – but we know the guarantee that large internal migration occurs throughout India.
This reflects the informal settlement of people we see growing in Indian cities.
During the early months of pandemic, we saw the exodus of migrant workers, which vice versa formed ‘unmazed workers’, returning to their original home.
These examples provide a sense of enormous internal movements.
This is caused by various reasons – but I argue that the migration of critical point propelling now is climate change.
