Coimbatore: CMC Colony at VKK Menon Road near the Gandhipuram Bus Terminal has urged City Corporation to provide them with drunk water connections that they are forced to take water from public taps.
Residents are descendants of a group of maintenance workers, brought by British officials to work for the city of Coimbatore, and live in houses belonging to City Corporation.
While the younger generation mainly became another job, some of them still worked with Civic’s body, said residents.
P Lakshmi, 65, a retired maintenance worker, said he had no choice but to take water from a public tap.
“Because in a hurry, residents often fight with each other while collecting water.
We have an electrical connection, salt water connection, and underground drainage connections, which are on behalf of corporate commissioners.
But the drinking water connection is still avoiding us.” Given that he had been Shifted to a house in the colony when he was six years old, n Dhanraj, 72, the president of the Association of Residents, said his parents were maintenance workers with Civic’s body and they had done scavenger work at that time.

“When we approached a pipe drinking water connection, the officials requested property tax documents and land documents, which we did not have because the land belonged to City Corporation.
We want the Civic body to provide pipe drinking water connections,” he said.
M Murugesan, another resident, said they had transferred Madras High Court and obtained orders to get land in their names after paying the guideline value of about 15 years ago.
“But the order has not been fulfilled.” A corporate official said houses should have been emptied by residents after their retirement of service, but the same thing was not done.
“We cannot provide water connections without documents needed.
Only the government can make policy decisions in this matter.
While they say they have received a court order to get the land transferred to their names, they have not produced the same before us.”
