Coimbatore: A 25-year-old young man was swept away at the Bhavani River at Oomapalayam near Mettupalayam on Sunday night.
M Ibrahim Basha, from Kattoor near Mettupalayam, went to the river with his friends Abudhakir, Jayasuryan, Riyas, Sivakumar and Kaja Moideen, all of them came from SM Nagar in Mettupalayam.
After consuming liquor, Ibrahim and his friends bathed in the river.
When taking a shower, Ibrahim challenged his friends to swim to another river bund.
Apart from the commemoration of his friends, Ibrahim tried to swim to another bund river and was swept away at the water flow.
Fire service personnel and rescue from Mettupalayam tried to track youth until 9pm in the river.
Because of the darkness, the search operation was stopped, and it will be continued on Monday morning.
