Coimbatore: A BJP man has been arrested for transporting the Poublampatti Town Panchayat office, taking verbal saliva with officials and trying to hang the prime minister’s portrait of Narendra Modi there.
Alandurai police identified who was arrested as M being published, Secretary of the BJP District Trade Wing.
While 11 other BJP men have also been ordered in this connection with tresspassing charges, blocking government servants from issuing their duties and criminal intimidation, they have not been arrested.
The police said they would be held soon.
BJP, however, is not affected by the turn of the event and said they will continue their efforts to get PM portraits displayed in all government offices.
The incident occurred on Saturday and was revealed on Sunday after the Bhaskaran video arguing with Panchayat officials appeared on social media.
According to the police, Bhaskaran entered the Pooluvapatti Pancayat office on Saturday with a portrait of Modi, asking officials to display the same there.
When officials, including Rangasamy executive officials, objections, Bhaskaran asked if the portrait of the minister of head M K Stalin and the former CM m grace can be displayed, why can’t PM possible? A police officer said.
“Rangasamy tells him that he is not against displaying PM portraits, but it must be done after obtaining permission from his superior.” However, Bhaskaran and his colleagues tried to hang portraits in the office.
Rangasamy filed a complaint with Alandurai police, who registered the first information report and arrested Bhaskaran on Sunday.
BJP has demanded the state government to display portraits of mod to government office.
Madurai District President BJP M Saravanan has submitted a petition on the district collector there recently in this matter.
He has quoted the government’s orders issued in 1990 which stated that PM portraits, among others, must be hung in the government office.
A senior government officer said there was no bar to display PM portraits at the government office, but it was not mandatory.
