Bogota: At least 11 people were killed and 35 were injured after landslides covered several houses in Central Colombia on Tuesday, said the country’s disaster management agency.
Incident in Dosquebradas, close to the city of Pereira, followed heavy rain in the province that grew up with the surrounding coffee.
“A landslide recorded in the morning in La Esneda neighborhood has so far left 35 injured people, who were present at the hospital, and 11 were killed,” said the UNGRD disaster body on Twitter.
The local authority has evacuated dozens of nearby houses because the Otun River has overflowed.
Landslides often occur in Colombia because of mountainous terrain, often heavy rain and poor or informal housing development.
Landslide disasters in the country are in the city of Mocoa in 2017, when more than 320 people were killed.
