New Delhi: Following anger over the death of Stan Swamy, the government said on Tuesday India remained committed to “promotion and protection of human rights from all its citizens”.
In a statement, MEA said Indian democratic and constitutional governments were equipped with independent justice, a series of national and state human rights panels that monitor violations, free media and vibrant civil society and vocal.
The reaction of the MEA follows comments by the United Nations Human Rights Office that it was very sad and disturbed by Swamy’s death and his call for India to ensure that no one was detained for training their basic rights to “freedom of expression”.
MEA spokesman Arinindam Bagchi said even though Swamy was arrested by Nia after the process due to the law, the guarantee application was rejected by the court.
