Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday directed Mayurbhanj district collectors to take appropriate action on the petition for the payment of appropriate compensation and rehabilitation of a man who is poor tribe, who was acquitted of murder after serving 19 years in prison.
The petition was filed by civil rights activists and human rights lawyers, Radhakananta Tripathy.
Habil Sindu from Balrampur village in Mayurbhanj is accused of three murders on January 3, 2003.
The couple and their son died allegedly due to suspicion of practicing witchcraft.
Sindu was arrested immediately after the triple murder following a complaint.
In 2005, the sessions judge-cum-cum-cum-cum (Baripada) has sentenced to life imprisonment Sindu.
But he has challenged the judgment in a higher court.
District and sessions court acquitted Sindu last month for lack of evidence after studying the entire case.
Tripathy, in his petition filed on December 18 last year, has urged the Commission to make provision for the payment of compensation to Sindu for years served in prison and the right to rehabilitation in the community.
She has cited several instances in which the NHRC ensure compensation and rehabilitation of the victims, who lost a great period in their lives without their own fault.
The relevant authorities were directed to take appropriate action within eight weeks of associating the complainant / victim and to inform him of the action taken in this matter, read the NHRC order.
