Mumbai: With coastal districts were cut by natural disasters, the State Cabinet on Wednesday cleaned the Conkan Disaster Management Program Rs 3,200 in which several mitigation steps would be taken for the region.
In the past two years, three districts – Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg have been hit by two cyclones, floods that lead to landslides, and other disasters.
As part of this program, a comprehensive plan will be prepared for capacity building in these districts.
The system will be arranged for early warning, better preparedness to deal with natural disasters will be part of the program.
According to the agreement given by the cabinet, from Rs 3,200 Crore, Rs 2,000 Crore will be spent from the remaining state disaster mitigation funds and 1,200 crore Hospitals will be given as part of the state budget in the next four years.
There are also plans to shift the utility underground so they are not damaged and also build strong infrastructure in the region.
For project implementation, the project monitoring committee will be regulated and experts will be employed for it.
“This region contains burnt natural disasters very often and this program will help them handle it better.
The idea is to reduce damage, increase response time and avoid loss and damage to critical infrastructure,” an official said.
Narisa Cyclone in 2020 which made the land near Alibag caused major damage to the region, which was later followed by Tauktae Typhoon in 2021, and then heavy rain which caused several landslides and victims in the region.
