Ahmedabad: Although there were protests from a number of members of the Party council, the State Congress on Tuesday appointed Shehzad Khan Pathhan as opposition leader (LOP) at Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for one year.
The appointment was made almost 11 months after the civilian poll was held last year.
The decision to appoint a minority community leader in the vote in Gujarat ruled by BJP was seen as a congressional effort to continue to gather together in facing the challenges of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) who planned to fight the assembly selection of Ahmedabad with strength full.
As Pathan’s name was resolved for posting LOP, there were protests from at least 11 council members, who even approached the Gujarat Jagdish Thakor’s president and threatened to resign.
The party has 24 board members at AMC 192-member.
