GUWAHATI: Assam parliamentarian and senior Congress leader Abdul Khaleque has written to the Chief Justice of Gauhati high court seeking restoration of fundamental rights of the people affected by the recent eviction drives in Sonitpur and Hojai district in central Assam.
Accusing both the district administrations of conducting the eviction drives by violating the May 10 order of the high court, Khaleque urged Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia to initiate suo-moto proceeding in order to restore the fundamental rights of the affected people.
The May 10 order of the high court reads: “It is also made clear that any decree for eviction/dispossession or demolition, which was passed by any court, tribunal or authority during this period, shall remain in abeyance subject to any specific orders which may be passed in a given case.” Khaleque said, “The state is currently under partial lockdown and people are being asked to stay at home to control the raging second wave of Covid-19.
But, the Sonitpur district administration prioritized eviction of 25 families last month and making them homeless at a time when the state is fighting the pandemic.
This immoral and inhuman action of the Sonitpur district administration has put the lives of 25 families, including women and children, at the risk of getting infected, as they have been rendered homeless.”
