Mangaluru: Fear caused when many PG Hostel inmates at Mangalore University (MU) fell ill with Covid-19-like symptoms.
The authorities sighed with relief, after they found that the infection source was contaminated with water supplied to the hostel.
The hostel accommodated around 468 graduate students.
Close to 100 students have been tested until now, and 60 students have tested the negative for the SARS-COV-2 virus.
The remaining results haven’t arrived yet.
Hostel Warden Govindaraju B said that from the past week, many PG students who were taking the exam had fallen ill by cold and cough fever, which was also found in those who suffered from Covid-19.
“We have to do the mass tests of students who are sick, and their main contact.
We suspect many of them are infected with the virus.
We are wrong.
All reports have come so far negative.
We then check the water tank in our hostel, and know that it causes infection In students.
It was cleaned thoroughly, after that the number of prisoners who developed such symptoms stopped.
The hostel was closed for months, and the tanks were not cleaned, “he said, adding that testing would continue every time inmates showed symptoms like Covid.
The source of the Konaje MU campus says that everyone has been tested and has symptoms, made to appear for the PG exam in a separate room.
In March, for about a month, the male hostel was declared a detention zone.
Govindaraju said that more than 25 inmates had been tested positive for Covid-19.
It is one of the main reasons for postponing the PG exam.
“The test is active.
We don’t want to take the current risks, and watch and test prisoners.” When the hostel inmates re-emerged for the exam, only one student from Kerala was positively tested for Covid-19.
He shifted to your guest house for 18 days.
“We have also asked students from Kerala not to go home until the PG exam is finished,” Govindaraju said.
