Surat: Cooperative societies from south Gujarat have come to the rescue of Tauktae-ravaged mango farmers. Apart from its normal procurement of mangoes for canning and pickling, Valsad Navsari Jilla Fal Ane Shakbhaji Sahakari Sangh Ltd, popularly called Gandevi Canning Mill, has bought 550 metric tonnes of’diminished’ mangoes which bore the brunt of this cyclonic winds. “Farmers might haven’t got anything to get the ruined mangoes. That is the reason we chose to get these mangoes to assist them,” said Dushyant Naik, director of the mill. Since many canning dealers in the area are spending a pittance for those fallen mangoes, Naik’s mill will soon be paying over double this sum. “At the marketplace, the dealers are paying approximately Rs 150 to get 20 kilograms of these mangoes. We’ll be paying over the double that sum,” Naik said. In the coming times also, the federation of these combined societies will soon be buying the normal inventory, Naik added. The canning factory employs these mangoes for creating pulp that is canned, different types of pickles and pastes. “We’ve got 14 complicated societies and of those, 10 societies take part with procurement of mangoes,” Naik told TOI.
