Rajkot: City police on Friday received 96 applications of harassment by loan sharks, the majority of victims were those who borrowed money because of the severe financial crisis caused by covid and pandemic-induced colors.
The police have organized a awareness program to educate people against borrowing money from illegal lenders wearing exorbitant interest rates.
Emotional scenes are also witnessed when women decide to tell the trials of harassment every day by the lenders of money.
Speaking with Toi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Manoharsharsh Jadeja, said, “We found many cases where people borrowed money due to the financial crisis during the Covid period.
We have received 96 applications where we have registered one violation and more Will be registered with the police station concerned after the initial investigation and collect evidence.
“One violation was registered at the Pradyumannagar police station by Jayant Panchasra against Dilipshinh Gehil and his son Narendrasinh.
According to complaints, Panchsara has borrowed Rs 70,000 in various numbers over the past three years and paying Rs 35,000.
However, the defendant allegedly beat him near Astron Chowk a few days ago and demanded Rs 70,000.
They even threatened to take two-wheeled vehicles and do it, they forced Panchasara to pay Rs 12,000 in place.
Speaking with reporters, Kanchan Solanki, an old woman, claimed that her son had borrowed RS five lakh and the family had paid interest for the past nine years.
They paid Rs 13 lakh but the lender demanded more Rs 10 lakh.
Solanki said his son produced Rs 50,000 per month but gave Rs 100 per day to run a nine-member family, while the remaining salary became interest payments.
The police refused to divulge the contents of the application received, expressing fear that the defendant might be vigilant.
Applicants are also afraid of harassment from money lenders if they know that they have approached the police.
“This is a violation to lend money without a license, but in the process of pocketing high interest, more violations are being carried out.
It is our efforts to educate people to borrow money from financial institutions or licensed loan,” Jadeja said.
According to sources, Rajkot police have registered more than 100 violations of loan up not registered in the last three years.
