Cop tries to nab gang selling liquor, gets thrashed

Coimbatore: A five-member gang assaulted a cop when the latter attempted to nab them red-handed selling liquor illegally at Avinashi in Tirupur district on Saturday.
The Avinashi police have arrested four of the accused, while the remaining one is on the run.A police source said the incident occurred when 32-year-old L Thiruvengadam, a grade-II police constable with the Tirupur district armed reserve police, along with special police sub-inspector Sarveswaran, was on probation raids at Moolakattu Thottam at Sengalipalayam village near Thekkalur.“Thiruvengadam, who is working with the Avinashi unit of Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW), was in plain clothes.
