CORPN AXES 8 trees in the park to build a service reservoir

Coimbatore: City corporate workers cut down eight trees in the park in Sivaram Nagar near Ramanathapuram on Thursday, triggering protests from activists and residents in the area.
The corporation plans to build a service reservoir with 24 liters capacity in the park.
As a construction location – 0.1350 square meters – has 23 trees, the corporation has obtained permission from the income department to fall.
The K Syed environment said this problem was first brought to their knowledge about two years ago and they filed objections.
Next, this problem is in a hurry.
But around 6 am on Thursday, corporate workers began to look over the tree even though residents had tried to stop him, said Syed.
When he reached the place and managed to stop the job, eight trees had been cut.
Most of the 23 trees are old decades, he added.
“There are several other backup sites in the surrounding area.
They are all left behind.
Why does the corporation not choose one of the sites and leave this site with a tree.
Both corporations and income officials must be blamed.
The income department should not give permission to cut trees,” he added in Karumbokatai.
But the corporation does not consider the option to transplant trees or heed the public demand for Sasikumar, a resident, said the problem was taken for the knowledge of the recent corporate commissioner, but nothing had changed on the ground.
“We are not against the construction of water tanks because we also face water shortages during the summer.
We only want developments to make sense with nature.”
