CORPN to recover two ponds in Akjanur

Coimbatore: City Corporation is ready to return two ponds in the Akjanur near Veeperalam with the help of a NGO under the scheme of my name Naame.
Ponds are not in a condition that can be used, because they are not maintained properly.
The closest residents have used a pool to dispose of garbage and release waste water.
In the absence of maintenance, the pool is generally covered with plants and invasive trees too.
A city corporate official said NGOs, the Indian environmental foundation, will contribute 60% of the funds for restoration work.
The remaining 40% costs will be filled with civil bodies.
“NGOs have paid us their contribution from RS32 Lakh.” Arun Krishnamurthy, founder, the foundation of the Indian environment, said work to remove garbage and invasive species had begun using Earthmovers.
“Other works such as desilting, bank strengthening and inlet regulation and outlets will be carried out in the next few months.
We plan to complete all jobs in July-August.” He said rainwater from the surrounding area was the main source of water for the pool.
“This waterbodies is important to enrich the groundwater level in the region.
They can also help prevent flooding in the area.” Krishnameorthy said they had succeeded in completing the recovery of six waterbodies – Kalatti Mariamman Kovil Tank, Division office tank, Kalam Kuttai, Periyakuttai, Kathirakuttai and Lake Thottipallayam – in the city so far.
“Everyone accepts enough water during the Northeast season.”
