Corpn to study the problems faced by cyclists, pedestrians

Coimbatore: City Corporation has appointed Nodal officers to study the problems faced by cyclists and pedestrians.
The Procedure Commissioner King Gopal Sunkara has chosen his own engineer of five corporate zones for assignments.
They will interact with passengers, cyclists and pedestrians to find out the problems faced by them and help the Civic body identify suitable places to promote cycling and walking.
Moving is part of the company’s joint initiative with Uyir NGOs and German Agencies for international cooperation (GIZ) to promote convutational ways to travel in the city.
They will also work to improve road security in and around city schools and ensure a safe trip for students.
For this, they have launched a secure school partnership recently.
As part of this, the experts have studied road infrastructure and the safety measures available in and around 25 corporate schools and found various problems such as speeding and lack of significantly threatening student safety.
The study also found 50% of students live within a radius of 1 km from the school.
“They are cycling or walking to school.
The parents of the remaining students say let their ward be traveling alone is insecure and quoting heavy vehicle movements and safety problems as a reason,” the official source said.
The road safety to 25 schools is assessed based on a standard set by the International Road Assessment Program and they are assessed under a five-star rating system.
Many roads did not meet the standards, GIZ officials said.
Aranjith, urban transportation experts, GIZ, said they planned to take 50-60 more schools in the next stage of study.
“The purpose of this initiative is to help students walk or cycling to school without worrying about safety issues.
This will encourage more people to take a healthy way of traveling, while reducing the burden on the environment created by vehicle pollution.”
