WASHINGTON: Covid-19 antibodies produced by the Pfizer vaccine decreased by more than 80 percent in senior nurse residents and their caregivers six months after receiving their second dose, a US study had found.
This research was led by Case Western Reserve University and Brown University in the US studied blood samples of 120 residents of nursing homes and 92 health care workers.
Researchers who specifically view humoral immunity – also called immune antibodies mediated – to measure the body’s defenses against the SARS-COV-2 virus, which caused Covid-19.
Unpublished studies, posted on the Medrxiv Prefrint server, found that individual antibody levels decreased by more than 80 percent after six months.
The results are the same on seniors, with an average age of 76, and caregivers, with an average age of 48, and Old Alike, according to the researchers.
Previous research by the team found that within two weeks after receiving the second dose of vaccines, seniors who had previously contracted Covid-19 had already shown a decrease in response to antibodies which were substantially lower than those experienced by younger caregivers.
At six months after vaccination, blood 70 percent of the occupants of the nursing home have “very bad ability to neutralize Korenavirus infection in laboratory experiments,” said David Canaday, a professor at Case Western Reserve University.
The result supports control centers and disease prevention (CDC), recommendations for booster shots – especially for parents – because immunity fades, said Canaday.
This study notes that booster is even more important because the Delta variant spreads.
At the beginning of a pandemic, the mortality of Covid-19 higher among residents of nursing homes in the US caused them to be a priority for vaccination, the researchers said.
Most of the residents of nursing homes receive a Pfizer vaccine under the authorization of emergency use because it is the first vaccine available on the market, they said.
“With the initial vaccine response of residents of nursing home houses, an increase in breakthrough infections and outbreaks, characterization of immunity durability to inform public health policies about the need to increase,” he added.
