NEW DELHI: US-based Covid-19 vaccine manufacturer Pfizer on Monday said it will supply its vaccine only to central governments and “supra-national organisations”. “Pfizer will supply Covid-19 vaccine only to central govts & supra-national orgs for deployment in national immunization programs. Allocation of doses and implementation plan within a country is a decision for local governments based on relevant health authority guidance,” the company said in a statement on Monday. “Pfizer’s discussions with the Government of India are ongoing & we are hopeful to bring the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for use in the country,” the company further said. The government meanwhile, said it is coordinating with all vaccine manufacturers, including Pfizer and Moderna, for vaccine procurement. It further said supply of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to India depends on the surplus stock available with these companies. Pfizer’s statement comes after Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia earlier in the day claimed that Moderna and Pfizer refused to supply vaccines directly to the Delhi government. Punjab government on Sunday was refused direct supply of the Covid-19 vaccine by Moderna, with the company citing its policy to deny the state government’s request. Facing criticism over the pace of vaccination, Centre had last month announced its decision to allow states and private hospitals to procure vaccines directly from the vaccine manufacturers. Many states since then floated global tenders for vaccines to inoculate their population.
