Chandigarh: In the first PAN-India study published on the impact of Covid in blood cancer patients, it was found that their overall death was 20.5%.
The researchers found that this could have 10% have this patient not infected with a virus.
The study also revealed that the diagnosis of Covid had a significant impact on anti-cancer therapy, which was cut off.
This study has been published in the publication of the prestigious natural group, ‘blood cancer journal’.
Cohort has 565 patients.
After the follow-up of 90 days, 116 patients (20.5%) died, where 75 (64.7%) had severe covid.
Among all patients who did not survive, 60/116 (51.7%) ended in 14 days in a covid diagnosis.
This study illustrates the results of patients from March 21, 2020, until March 20, 2021.
“Most covids cause early death, while the deaths of cancer are delayed.
This means that AML patients (acute myeloid leukemia) are especially dying because of their covid and cancer.
Myeloma is a malignancy The less aggressive and these patients are dying because of their cancer than Covid, perhaps because of their care for cancer disrupted, “said Dr.
Arihant Jain, the first author of the pirimer.
“If patients develop covid, many cancer treatments need to be stopped or limited so that the patient does not experience severe covid because most cancer treatments are immunosuppressive.
In most cases, the decision to interrupt care is made by a doctor,” he said.
Three types of blood cancer patients are considered in research – chronic lymphocytic leukemia, multiple myeloma and adults.
This research was conducted by the Consortium of Hematology Cancer in which the main participant centers were the Memorial Center of Tata, Mumbai, Pirimer, Chandigarh, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, Puducherry, Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi, College Christian medical, Vellore, Narayana Health City, Bangalore etc.
“At present, we try to analyze the effects of covid vaccination in these patients.
When this research was conducted, vaccination had not yet begun,” said Prof.
Pankaj Malhotra, the appropriate research writer, the department of clinical hematology and medical oncology.
Of the 565 patients who were part of this study, 38% of those treated in hospitals had moderate / heavy covid.
In addition, 30% in remission during a diagnosis while 76% received active anti-cancer therapy when Covid was diagnosed.
Death is 8%, 16%, and 65% in patients with covid mild, medium, and heavy.
