CHENNAI: Renault-Nissan has already told a courtroom it has to continue manufacturing at its car plant to fulfill requests, rejecting claims in a worker marriage that Covid-19 security protocols were being discounted at the mill, legal figures reveal. Renault-Nissan India and employees in its plant in Tamil Nadu were locked in a legal tussle after employees petitioned a court to stop operations since social distancing standards were flouted and company-provided health advantages have been outweighed by the threat to their own lives. In reaction, Renault-Nissan has claimed in a court filing – that isn’t public – there is a”compelling need” to carry on operations to satisfy national and export requests. It stated all Covid-19 standards were followed. The case will be observed on Monday in the Madras high court once the state administration, which can be party to the situation, is expected to file its reply. A leading Tamil Nadu state official told Reuters on Sunday car business be permitted to continue operations, but actions will be taken against violations of social distancing protocols by almost any organization. The legal conflict highlights the challenges large businesses are confronting to maintain functioning in India amid increased anxieties from workers that fear for their wellbeing and security. “This is a matter of lifestyle livelihood,” M Moorthy, general secretary of Renault Nissan India employees union that reflects all 3,500 permanent mill employees, told Reuters. “We merely need social bookmarking protocols to be followed closely along with the direction to be accountable for any threats to the employees or their family .” The mill, which generates Nissan, Renault and Datsun automobiles, also workers 3,000 contract employees, 2,500 team members and 700 apprentices. Nissan, that has a vast majority stake at the Renault-Nissan India plant, also declined to comment to this report. India is now facing its next tide of coronavirus infections. Tamil Nadu is among those worst-hit countries recording over 30,000 cases every day. The country, an automobile hub called India’s”Detroit”, has levied a complete lockdown before May 31 but has enabled a few factories, such as cars, to keep on operating. Renault-Nissan’s May 16 court filing demonstrates it’s impending export orders of approximately 35,000 vehicles to the May-October interval, which should not satisfied could result in penalties and lack of company.
