Chennai: The Madras High Court on Friday refused to hold the State Election Commission (SEC) from notifying election to local bodies throughout the state.
The first bench from the acting Chair of Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice P D Audikesavalu refused to provide assistance to a group of applicants who wanted to elect to be postponed in the third wave view of Covid-19.
The court instead of telling the applicants that the application would be taken for the final hearing on January 24.
Appearing for a doctor’s applicant, Advocate S Prabakanan believes that the SEC was in a hurry to conduct local body selection without considering the current pandemic situation.
“The SEC has failed to assess the Covid-19 detention zone and block.
Because the lives of people involved, taking timely action,” he said.
Representing other applicants, Advocates A R L Sundarsan argues that even though the authorities will be tasked with the election, they also have their responsibilities to protect and improve public health standards.
“The Supreme Court has commanded the country to conduct normal elections, with the ongoing selection of pandemic will increase the likelihood of the spread of the virus placing the lives of people at stake,” he added.
Opposing the request, advice for Siv Siva Shanmugam proposed that it was the mandate of the APEX court to complete the election within four months.
In the order, seconds must notify the selection on or before January 26.
Circular on the protocol and prevention method that must be followed from the nomination until the election declaration was released in December 2021, he said.
