New Delhi: India on Thursday came out of the Asbc ASBC U-22 boxing championship in Uzbekistan because of the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in the elite national camps that were ongoing in Nis Patiala, TOI had learned.
According to the source of the Indian boxing Federation (BFI), the decision to draw a contingent of the first international tournament was taken during a meeting with coaches and medical staff who suggested sending teams to Tashkent after the Covid outbreak in the camp, which has 63 male boxers and 27 Training staff personnel and support.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary General of BFI Hemanta Kalita, Federation official, coach Narendra Rana (Male) and Bhaskar Bhat (female) and Chair of the Medical Commission Dr.
Karajeet Singh.
The event, which will take place in Tashkent from January 20-30, has attracted entry from major countries playing Asian boxing.
The first edition of the championship was planned to be hosted in Tashkent on December 7-17 in 2021 but following the decision to manage the Asian Boxing Confederation and the Federation of Uzbekistan boxing, the event was postponed until January 20-30.
According to sources, there were eight new cases reported in the camp on Thursday after 18 national camping back positive covid the day before.
Among new cases, five were boxers and three of the coaching staff.
The decision to attract teams has been communicated to the Federation of Uzbekistan and ASBC.
