KUALA LUMPUR: Covid-19 Sinovac Vaccine is very effective against serious illness, although rival shots of Pfizer / Biontech and Astrazeneca show a better level of protection, a large real-world study of Malaysia shows.
The latest data is a boost for Chinese companies, which Covid-19 vaccines are under supervision of their effectiveness after infection reports among health care workers are fully immunized with Sinovac’s shots in Indonesia and Thailand.
This study, conducted by the Malaysian government, found that 0.011% of around 7.2 million Sinovac shot recipients needed treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for Covid-19 infection, health officials told reporters on Thursday.
Conversely, 0.002% of around 6.5 million recipients of Pfizer / BionTech vaccines require ICU treatment for Covid-19 infection, while 0.001% of 744,958 recipients of AstraZeneca shots require similar treatment.
Kalaialarasu Padiasamy, a Director at the Institute for Clinical Research who conducted a shared research with the task of Covid-19 National, said vaccination – regardless of the brand – has reduced the risk of acceptance to intensive care of 83% and reduced the risk of death 88% based on smaller research involving around 1.26 million people.
“The breakthrough level for acceptance of intensive care units is very low,” he said, adding overall ICU revenues among individuals who were fully vaccinated to 0.0066%.
The death rate of a person who is fully vaccinated is also low at 0.01% and the majority of them are above the age of 60 years or with comorbidity.
There is a difference in the recipient demographics of three vaccines and it can lead to different results, Kalaialarasu said.
Many Astrazeneca recipients are in the “middle age of mid-age”, while Pfizer and Sinovac’s shots are very much “very much for vulnerable populations,” he said.
AstraZeneca recipients also contributed a much smaller proportion of research, which involved around 14.5 million individuals who were fully vaccinated and carried out for more than five months since 1.
April in July, Malaysia said it would stop giving a Sinovac vaccine after the inventory ended, as this Has a number of other vaccines that are sufficient for the program.
Sinovac vaccine has been widely used in several countries including China, Indonesia, Thailand and Brazil, and the company said earlier this month has supplied 1.8 billion doses in and abroad.
Malaysia has entirely vaccinated 58.7% of the 32 million populations and gave at least one dose to 68.8%.
