CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu on Sunday recorded 14,016 new Covid-19 infections and 267 deaths thereby pushing the total so far to 23,53,721 and 29,547 respectively, the Health Department said.
Among the infected were two returnees – one from Bahrain and the other from Andhra Pradesh.
Recoveries continued to eclipse new infections with 25,895 people getting discharged from various hospitals.
Till date, the total discharged were 21,74,247 leaving 1,49,927 active cases, a medical bulletin said.
Coimbatore and Erode constituted the majority of new infections with 1,895 and 1,323.
Chengalpet, Salem, Thanjavur and Tiruppur clocked the infections in excess of 500.
Chennai reported fresh cases below 1,000 in number for the second consecutive day, with 935.
The State capital,however, leads in the number of total infections among districts with 5,25,009 cases.
The number of deceased, too, remains high in Chennai with 7,826 fatalities till date.
The number of RT-PCR samples tested today was at 1,77,295 pushing the cumulative number of specimens examined so far to 2,99,68,038.
Among the 267 deceased, 69 succumbed to the virus without any comorbidity or pre-existing illness.
With co-morbidity, a 12-year-old girl from Coimbatore with ‘Type 2 diabetes mellitus’ died at district medical college hospital due to Covid-19 pneumonia.
Earlier in the day, Medical Minister M Subramanian inspected the vaccination camps being held in northern districts of the State.
He said the State has crossed a ‘milestone’ by vaccinating over 1 crore people as of Saturday.
“Yesterday (Saturday) was the highest in terms of vaccination of 3.26 lakh people.
We crossed the milestone of vaccinating more than 1 crore people till date,” he told reporters.
On the availability of vaccines, he said the State has till now received 1.10 crore vaccines from the Centre, including those for which the State government had paid Rs 100 crore.
To a query on the black fungus, Subramanian said till date 1,499 people were affected in the State and the government has requested the Centre to increase the quantity of Amphotericin-B vaccines to treat the disease.
“The Chief Minister (M K Stalin), in his letter to the Union Health minister (Dr Harsh Vardhan), had sought 30,000 doses.
At that time the number of people who were under treatment was less.But now, the number infected is 1,499,” he said.
“We need double the amount of medicines from what was required earlier.
The Chief Minister is likely to take the matter up with the Prime Minister when they meet in Delhi,” he added.
Tamil Nadu has announced black fungus or mucormycosis as a notified disease and formed a committee comprising senior doctors to give suggestions to the government on the treatment procedures.
