Madurai / Trichy: The number of new Covid-19 cases in Madurai rose to 19 on Monday, the highest in 73 days.
The last time district recorded more cases everyday on October 23.
The district reported only five recovery and the number of active cases rose to 90.
The district’s peposititivity level had risen to 0.4% from 0.2%.
No Covid-19 death recorded in Madurai for the fifth consecutive day.
Meanwhile, fresh trichy cases rose to 27 of 19 on Sunday.
The number of active cases also rose until 159 on Monday from 144.
The district only issued seven patients on Monday and had no casualties.
A total of 170 new cases were recorded in ten South Tamil Nadu district on Monday, which was the highest since August 9.
Kanyakumari (47) has recorded the highest number of new cases, followed by Tuticorin (24), Virudhunagar (24), Madurai (19) and Tirunelveli (17).
Theni (3), Tencasi (4), Ramanathapuram (5), Dindigul (6) and Sivagangai (9) each add less than 10 cases.
Only 46 recovery recorded in the region on Monday with new cases exceed the number of recovery in all 10 districts.
The number of active cases in the southern region rose to 862 of 740.
The number of active cases in Theni which was less than 10 for the last 26 days had risen to 11 on Monday.
This district has the least amount of active cases in the region.
The number of districts with more than 100 active cases rose to four of only one district (Kanyakumari) on December 31.
Tuticorin (199) has the highest number of active cases in the region, followed by Kanyakumari (195), Virudhunagar (123) and Tirunelveli (103).

Nine middle districts including Trichy recorded 71 new cases.
The number of active cases in the region also jumped to 501 of 479.
