Pune / New Delhi: The combination of covishield and covaxin can not only be safe but bring out better immune protection and no different side effects with the same vaccine regimen, ICMR analysis against “Serendipious” Covid-19 Vaccine-Mix in Uttar Pradesh shows.
This study examined 18 people above which accidentally received Covishield as the first Jab and Covaxin as the second.
The researchers compared the profiles of salvation and immunogenicity of this group with two individual groups who received covishield or covaxin.
“This finding shows that immunization with a combination of vector-based vaccines vector adenovirus followed by all virus vaccines that are not active is not only safe but also causes a better immunogenicity,” pre-printing the Indian medical research board published in Medrxiv said.
Blood samples from 18 people who mistakenly gave Covishield and then Jab Covaxin in April-May was analyzed at a different stage for 60 to 70 days after vaccination.
“Mix-and-Match Covishield and Covaxin as the first and second doses trigger a superior immune response rather than two doses both covishield or covaxin,” said Senior Scientist ICMR Rajni Kant, research researcher.
This is the first report of mixed immunization that has shown salvation and significantly increases the immune response.
This finding is important because experts have asked whether the dose of covishield and covaxin can be mixed to get around the lack of supply.
At present, the intentional mixing of two vaccines is not recommended.
But to be convincingly proven these findings, the ICMR researchers said the randomized multicentre controlled trial (RCT) would be needed because the sample size was currently small.
The findings show immunogenicity profiles in people who receive a superior vaccine against Alfa, Beta and Delta variants, IgG antibodies and neutralization antibody responses are significantly higher than in the case of homologous groups.
“For the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report heterologous boost prime vaccination effects with adenovirus vector vaccines followed by all viral vaccines that are inactive,” the researchers said.
