Mumbai: Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale on Thursday issued circular instruction personnel not to ask written statements from people who approached the police station for certificates after losing property.
City police, over the past few years have become a practice asking for residents to get a written statement from a notary before issuing a certificate of loss of property.
Nagre has now warned of strict departmental actions if there are police officers asking for a written statement.
Ending such practices at the level of the police station as illegal, Nagrlya in the circle of one page stated, “There is no provision in the law for such a written statement.
However, written statements are sued.” Circular has been issued for all police authorities concerned.
People approach the police if they lose bank checkbooks, passports, SIMs, important identity cards etc.
After they get a letter from the police for losing property, they can apply for copies of their documents.
