New Delhi: The increase in crimes against women could be the cause of concern because Delhi police data showed a 43% increase in the number of reported rape cases between January 1 and June 15 this year relative to the same period.
Cases of persecution rose 39%, while cases of cruelty by husband and in-laws have shown a massive increase of 107%.
The police connected an increase in criminal attacks on women to the Covid-19 pandemic and the conditions they created and showed that in most of these cases, the defendant was a family member or relative of the victims.
The number of rape cases reported until June 15 this year was 833 compared to 580 years ago.
Likewise, cases of persecution rose dramatically from 735 cases between January and June 15 last year to 1,022 cases this year.
Cases under the Law on Dowry and those related to women’s abduction and cruelty by their husbands and in-laws, respectively, increased by 239%, 133% and 107%.
Toi spoke to senior police officers who associated an increase in liftdown.
