Coimbatore: crimes against women and children are rising in the city, who reported 51 cases of rape of children and 13 adults in 2021, each compared to 46 and two, in 2020.
Overcoming the media, the Pradip City Police Commissioner Kumar on Friday said their focus was to drop crimes against women and children and ensure their safety.
City police have registered 77 cases under the protection of children from sexual violations (Posco) acting in 2021, when 51 small daughters were raped and 26 others were sexually attacked, compared to 69 – 46 rape and 23 cases of persecution – by 2020 “We have seen an increase of 11.6% in the case of Pocso in 2021,” said the police source.
Crime against women, meanwhile, jumped by 48% during the period.
In 2021, the city has recorded 235 cases of various crimes against women – 13 rape cases, eight cases of persecution, five kidnappings, 22 cases of domestic violence, 132 cases under the banning of Tamil Nadu women and 55 cases under immoral traffic (Prevention) acts – compared to 158 in 2020.
The police have arrested the defendant in all of these cases.
However, there were no massive deaths within the boundaries of city police in the past two years.
“We adopt a prevention and punishment strategy in the case of crimes against women and children.
Our priority is ensuring the safety of women and children in the city,” said Pradip Kumar.
He said police officers would interact with children, parents and staff of their educational institutions to sensitive to crimes against children.
“We hope that such initiatives will help prevent crime against children in the city.”
