Jorhat: The head of Assam Minister Himanta Buswa Sarma on Thursday ordered the police to submit a criminal case in connection with the ship overturned in Brahmaputra in Jorhat Regency who claimed a single life while two people were still missing.
After visiting the accident site with senior officials, Sarma told reporters that in accordance with the initial probe, the management error was found to be the main reason for the accident, which occurred on Wednesday night.
“I have asked the Jorhat police to submit a criminal case for the accident.
On this day, we will announce a high-level probe to find out the reason behind the accident,” he said.
The minister’s chairman also said that there were 10 private machinery ships with a single engine operating between Nimati Ghat in Jorhat on the south bank of Brahmaputra to Majuli, the largest river island in the world.
“Starting today, all single machine ships will be banned from plying.
The machines are not a marine engine.
However, if an owner wants to turn it into a marine engine, we will support them,” he added.
Sarma said the cost of the marine engine around Rs 10 Lakh, which will be given to private owners who are willing to the government as soon as their application.
“Out of the total number, 75 percent will be a government subsidy and 25 percent will be given as a loan.
They can start applying today at the Office of Deputy Commissioner Majuli,” he said.
Sarma also said a total of 90 people traveling with personal vessels that were not liked.
From them, one person died and two were still missing.
Search operations and rescue last night found 87 people alive.
