T’puram: Director of Veteran Velayudhan Nair, known as Cross Belt Mani, who is Darling producer for years because of his money spinning production, died here on Saturday.
He was 86.
Born in Thiruvananthapuram, Nair began his career as a cinematographer assistant at Merryland Studio.
A mixture of ambition, industrial, and talent helped him launched his first film Midumidukki in 1968, starring Satyan and Sarada.
Two years later, he collaborated with N N Pillai to create innovative ‘cross belts’, a film marked by his name and since the success of phenomenal.
The film runs a full house in a two-week cinema into the release.
He is a specialist in extinguishing a commercially successful film and always said that he never let the manufacturer down.
He had never hesitated to photograph movies on the wide canvas and made Neethipeedam in 1973, adaptation of Les Miserables.
Nair directed around 40 films in his career.
The final rite will be held on Sunday.
