Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Monday directed the West Bengal government to submit a written statement stating his position in the pill that challenged the rapture of the Calcutta University vice chancellor at the claim that it was done by contrary to the rules.
Applicant Anindya Sundar Das, an advocate who trained in the High Court and university alumni, claimed that Sonali Chakravarty Banerjee Chancellor was appointed back to the post in August, 2021 by the principal secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education.
Lawyer Billwadal Bhattacharya, representing the applicant, which was submitted before the court that the Governor of West Bengal, as a former Chancellor’s office, had the authority to appoint representatives of the State University Chancellor.
Opposing the petition, state advocate General N Mookherjee prayed for time to submit Affidavit in this issue.
Allowing a prayer, a division bench consisting of chairman of Prakash Shrivastava and Justice R Bharadwaj directing the state government to submit a written statement stating his position on March 22, when this problem will be taken to hear again.
Bhattacharya stated that Chancellor, during the consultation appointed representatives of Baru Chancellor, has given an extension of three months in 2021.
However he claimed that the Department of Higher Education of the State Government, gave the reappointment of Banerjee for four years, contrary to rules.
He has been appointed as Deputy Chancellor of the Prestigious University in 2017 at that time Chancellor for a period of four years.
