New Delhi: Chairman of Indian Justice (CJI) NV Ramana on Sunday expressed concern for the increasing case of custodian torture and police cruelty in the country and said that the threat to human rights and body integrity was the highest at the police station declaration and constitutional guarantee.
Ramana, while overcoming the event organized by the National Law Service Authority (Nalsa), said: “The threat to human rights and body integrity is the highest in the police station.
Custodial torture and other police cruelty is a problem that is still valid in our society regardless of Constitutional Declaration and Guarantee, Lack of Effective Legal Representatives in the Police Station is a big loss to be arrested or detained.
“The integrity of the body is not able to be contested from the physical body and emphasize the importance of human personal autonomy on their own bodies.
“To maintain the excess police check, the dissemination of information about constitutional rights for legal assistance and the availability of free legal aid services is needed.
Installation of display boards and outdoor stockpiling in each police station or prison is a step in this direction,” he said.
Ramana on the occasion launched a legal aid service application and said, “Legal Aid Service Application, which is being launched today, will be installed mandatory in all legal and institutional workers.
This will allow them to submit legal aid applications in a few seconds from any place in this country.
“” Despite Covid pandemic, we have managed to continue our legal assistance services.
Introduction to such technological tools has ensured that every challenge in the future will not hinder the work of legal aid agencies, “he added.
