Hyderabad: Cyber crime in Telangana saw a large leap of 86.7% by 2020 from the previous year.
Overall, crime has risen 12.4% in the state, according to data for 2020 which was released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, crimes against the elderly and violations of SC & SC (Prevention of cruelty) have seen ticks in the state, while the overall reduction in murder, kidnapping and crime against women and children.
NCRB officials said that a total of 1,47,504 criminal cases were registered in 2020.
Spike in cyberspace crimes was associated with major changes in work and life after the Pandemic Covid-19 in 2020.
“With an increase in time online in 2020, people become Vulnerable to cyber crime, especially after working from home began.
Apart from that, the Mandatory FIR registration policy has seen a large increase in the case of virtual world crime in the state for the past few years, “said a senior police officer Telangana.
Cyber crime involves around 100 cases based on complaints by women and children for cyber stalkers, 3,316 cases of cyber fraud and 252 cases of credit / debit card fraud.
Among 1,959 cases listed under SC & SC (prevention of cruelty) act, in 28 cases of victims were killed and in 27 cases there was an attempt to murder.
According to NCRB, the state saw 764 cases of rape and 35 cases of efforts to rape.
“The decline in violations such as murder, kidnapping, crimes against women and children was observed in Hyderabad also across Telangana,” said an official.
